In our latest report ('DB 2005 ? H1) Telecompaper estimates that in the first two quarters of 2005,the Dutch broadband penetration per household increased to 51.4 percent at the end of June 2005, up 6.6 percent compared to the penetration rate at the end of 2004 (44.8 percent).

Penetration per 100 inhabitants increased to 22.3 percent at the end of Q2, almost 50 percent up from 15.9 percent a year before and almost one percent more than in Q1.

The Dutch broadband market grew by 15 percent in first six months of 2005 to 3.63 million broadband connections compared with 3.16 million at the end of 2004. Of the 474,000 new connections, 298,000 or 63 percent are ADSL and 176,100 or 37 percent are cable connections.

The absolute growth of broadband connections is slowing down with Q2 being the first quarter since Q3 2003 with less than 285,000 additions (186,800).
ADSL accounted for 61 percent of the net broadband connections in the Netherlands, whereas cable accounted for 39 percent at the end of June 2005.

Planet Internet became the first ADSL-only ISP to reach the position of large broadband ISP in the Netherlands with 491,000 customers on 30 June.
Wanadoo dropped to second place with 482,000 customers, closely followed by with 480,000.

KPN is increasing its influence on the market. In the first six months of 2005 they added Cistron and Freeler as brand to their broadband providers and increased their market share on the ADSL market to 54 percent.

The total number of broadband subscribers with a KPN-related connection increased to 1.15 million or almost 32 percent of the whole broadband market.

Based on current developments Telecompaper estimates that the Dutch broadband market will grow its customer base by 29 procent in 2005, to approximately 4 million broadband connections, representing a penetration rate of 57 procent.
